Writetober 2023, Day 31: 'Open Graveyard'
Buried in the heart of New Spring was a near-abandoned graveyard. The tombs there were silent witnesses to the city's changes and stagnations. The graveyard always carried a mystery and sense of serenity to it, bearing many flowers and other tributes to the lost. The gates were always open, too. Many graves didn't carry tombstones, either.
The graveyard never had many visitors, as no one had been buried there for centuries. However, Allie frequented the cemetery. When she needed some time away, she'd sit on its benches. Although, one day, she decided to move away from the city. A month before moving, she thought of burying some of her items in the graveyard. Namely, a notebook that her parents had gave her claiming to harbor the rules of life.
The notebook had always been the cause of many of the problems in her life. One specific rule haunted her for years - "Friends will ruin you." She spent a lot of her time after arguments with her parents meditating in the graveyard So, she finally decided burying the book there was an appropriate catharsis. The day before she moved, she drove there, burning the book and burying it.
Months after moving, she kept having dreams of the book. Arguments with her parents. Her burning the book. It all came to a head when while getting ready, her mirror turned into a portal. She stepped away from it, until it sucked her into it. She was right where she was before, the same cemetery where she burned the book. Suddenly, the book came beyond its grave, reforming from its ashes. Alix kept trying to run out, but she couldn't. Abruptly, she was buried, taking the book's place. She couldn't breathe or move, she was permanently trapped.
Don't try to run from your past.. The future and the past are always connected.
